First aid

The first-aid kit I actually use off-grid

Notes here are members’ methods, not professional advice. Canning, water treatment, and first aid can be dangerous if done wrong. Read the safety disclaimer.

Wilderness EMT and off-grid cook. Writes about the kits and skills that get used, not the ones that look good on a shelf.

I have opened more kits that were designed by a packing list than by an injury. When something happens on a place without a short ambulance ride, you want the four problems that actually show up: bleeding, breaks, burns, and the chronic stuff you already live with.

Bleeding

A real tourniquet (one you have practiced), compressed gauze, a couple of pressure dressings, trauma shears, nitrile gloves, a marker to write the time. I do not keep novelty clotting powders as my first move. Direct pressure still wins.

Breaks and sprains

SAM splint, triangular bandages, athletic tape, an elastic wrap. A folding stretcher is nice. Knowing how to use a blanket as one is nicer.

Burns and bits

Burn gel for small stuff, clean sheets for big stuff, honey in a pinch on minor burns once they are cooled. Tweezers, irrigation syringe, wound wash. I boil water and let it cool when the sterile saline runs out.

The part people skip

A written list of every medication, dose, and allergy in the house, plus a thirty-day extra supply of the ones you cannot miss. A bottle of children's ibuprofen even if you do not have children — dosing is easier when someone cannot swallow pills. A headlamp. Gloves that fit the smallest adult on the place.

Train once a year. A kit you cannot use is a box. I take a wilderness first-aid weekend every other spring and I still forget a step when the blood is real. Practice is the item that does not expire, but it is the one that goes stale.

The medication list in the lid is the thing I did after reading this. I also added a spare pair of reading glasses. Cannot put a splinter out if I cannot see it.
